A good hire in Thorold

Thorold recently hired Ken Scholtens as manager of economic development. His role is to be facilitator between all stakeholders that have a part in the current and future business endeavours of the city.

There are many things to consider when attracting a company. Top of list is to understand what the business considers important. Favourable tax rates, stable utilities, advanced infrastructure, experienced and educated workforce, etc.

What is evident is staff retention will be the top priority. When changing companies is as easy as logging into a new web address, staff need to be happy at work and home. Thorold has to be attractive to the company and its labour force.

Mr. Scholtens is going to need to promote Thorold’s non-business benefits. A top university and community college, world-class sport facilities, night-life hot spots, access to sporting events, entertainment, etc.

I hope Mr. Scholtens searches out businesses that would be a good fit and the steps necessary to get them here. Additionally, his plan should encourage university and college graduates to set up businesses and entail collaboration with surrounding municipalities. A company locating anywhere in Niagara, benefits all Niagara.

I applaud Thorold for taking this initiative.
