Democracy, what democracy?

Re: Why I want Mike Schreiner to lead Liberals, Jan. 31

Can you imagine for a moment a Canada ruled by the Green Party with the Bloc Québécois as official opposition? It’s always perplexed me how a federal political party could brand itself on a singular platform with any realistic expectation of leading this country.

Why on God’s green earth, pardon the pun, would the Green Party hitch its wagon to one horse to attract the majority vote? They’re dead on arrival.

Sure, the environment is critically important and the party is likely filled with very talented people, but Canada has far more complex issues to resolve than the 1.5 per cent emissions it contributes to global greenhouse gas.

And how is a federal party allowed to brand itself in favour of a single province? Is the Bloc under some delusion it will inspire an insurrection of support from Alberta or B.C.?

That leaves us with three parties, and if you exclude the NDP, which would likely bankrupt this country in one term, only two.

I wish Schreiner all the best if he decides to lead the Ontario Liberals, he’s a good man. Unfortunately he’s already played his hand; we know who he is.

I’m more concerned with democracy and the fragile footing it sits upon in Canada today.

We need more visionaries with a national and global perspective if we are to be taken seriously on the world stage.

Let’s vote for that!
