Let’s just dissolve Niagara Region

Re: Seconding the call for new voices, May 11

Whilst I agree residents of Niagara should have a voice in electing a regional chair, I think a far better solution would be to dissolve Niagara Region entirely.

After more than 40 years it still shows little signs of ever being a real success and during those years I’m sure every new council makes promises claiming they will be “new voices.”

I believe the author, a former regional councillor, was also for a time chair of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, an equally dysfunctional body.

While the hard work of resident organizations, particularly A Better Niagara, did lead to a shakeup of this current regional council it is obvious it remains the same club with those new voices not being allowed to be heard.

Dissolution of Niagara Region may create some initial chaos, but the tax savings to each of the 12 municipalities just may allow them to focus on their own residents’ needs.
