Thank you for trying

Re: Lesson about education, May 13

I appreciated the letter from Perry Schlanger attempting to respond to a previous letter from a teacher basher. I say “attempted” because any facts presented with verifiable data are lost on these people.

They start their tirades with an unverifiable statement about the state of our education system and then pile on more unsubstantiated judgments.

Because I had great respect for my teachers in elementary and high school, I thought I would get the same as a teacher.

I was less than four months into my young career when I was invited to a Christmas dinner. When a man who I had never met learned I was a teacher, he launched into an abusive diatribe attacking me and my profession. I was stunned he felt free to embarrass me in front of others who were strangers to me.

I soon learned there were others like him. I would try to respond either in person or in letters to the media. After a while, I gave up. So thank you Mr. Schlanger for trying to enlighten.
