5 things to do in Niagara on Victoria Day weekend

THE ST. CATHARINES STANDARD

From fireworks to midway rides at the Virgil Stampede — there are plenty of activities taking place throughout Niagara for families to make the most of the Victoria Day weekend.

Virgil Stampede

The 54th stampede returns to Virgil Sports Park, 1567 Four Mile Creek Rd., Saturday to Monday, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday to start three days of activities and entertainment, featuring midway rides and an outdoor food court, culminating in a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Admission is free on Sunday, but costs $5 each for adults on Saturday and Monday. Ride wrist bands are $35 each.

Welland fireworks

The Rose City is celebrating Victoria Day with family fun, music and fireworks at Welland Main Arena on King Street.

The free event includes laser tag, mini-putt and live entertainment from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Port Dalhousie carousel

A nickel is still enough for a ride on the carousel at Lakeside Park, when it starts for its 101st season on Saturday, as the city opens several attractions for the summer to help celebrate the long weekend. The historic ride will be open weekends and holidays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and then daily until Sept. 5.

Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm at 650 Read Rd., opens for the season as well Saturday, welcoming visitors daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It features rescued animals such as horses, cows, llamas, an alpaca and donkeys — as well as an accessible playground and trails.

Morningstar Mill at Decew Falls is opening its doors as well Saturday, with free admission.

Queen Victoria Park

Niagara Falls’ first fireworks display of the season will light up the sky at the holiday’s namesake Queen Victoria Park on Friday, starting at 10 p.m. The displays will then take place nightly until Oct. 10.

It’s one of numerous attractions offered in the city throughout the season.

Sunshine and Blooms Market

More than 50 vendors will set up shop at Vale Health and Wellness Centre, 550 Elizabeth St., in Port Colborne for the Sunshine and Blooms Market on Saturday.

The event will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Although admission and parking is free, non-perishable food donations will be collected for Port Cares.
